Abbeyleix Comfrey Fertiliser Project
A Community-Led Circular Economy Initiative
A Community-Led Circular Economy Initiative
Abbeyleix Tidy Towns is pleased to introduce our Natural Comfrey Fertiliser and Plant Tonic – a locally produced, eco-friendly plant feed designed to support both healthy gardens and sustainable living.
This project emerged from a mini research initiative carried out by one of our dedicated volunteers, who explored how the circular economy could be applied at a local level. Comfrey quickly stood out as a valuable and underused natural resource due to its high nutrient content and vigorous local growth.
Comfrey is a deep-rooting plant that absorbs minerals from the soil and stores them in its large leaves. When these leaves are fermented, they release a natural, nutrient-rich fertiliser high in nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus – ideal for encouraging strong, healthy growth in flowering and fruiting plants, especially tomatoes.
We are fortunate to have access to a site in Abbeyleix where comfrey grows abundantly. This has allowed us to fast-track the project, using established plants to begin production immediately rather than starting from scratch.
3 Bucket System
Harvest the Leaves
Cut leaves from the plant about 5 cm above ground level.
Wear gloves—comfrey has coarse hairs that can irritate skin.
Preparation
Take one of your three buckets and drill a series of drainage holes in the bottom to allow the liquid to seep through. Pack comfrey leaves tightly into the bucket with the drainage hole, potentially chopping them up to speed up the process.
Drainage:
Position the bucket with the hole inside the second bucket without a hole to collect the liquid that seeps out.
Weighing down:
Fill the third bucket with water and place on top of the 2 stacked buckets to keep a consistent heavy weight.
Decomposition:
The comfrey leaves will decompose, releasing a nutrient-rich liquid.
Collection:
After a few weeks, the liquid fertilizer is ready to be collected from the bottom bucket.
Dilution:
Dilute the liquid with water (typically 10-20 parts water to 1 part comfrey liquid) before using it to feed plants.
This initiative reflects a truly circular approach to local sustainability:
We harvest the comfrey by hand.
We process it into fertiliser using a natural fermentation method.
We bottle and label it locally.
We return it to the community as an affordable, chemical-free plant tonic.
The fertiliser is highly concentrated and must be diluted before use.
Mix at a ratio of between 10:1 and 15:1 – ten to fifteen parts water to one part comfrey tonic.
It can be applied as a soil drench around plants to support healthy growth and flowering. Avoid applying directly to leaves or using on seedlings.

Get Involved
This project is more than just a gardening aid – it's a community effort to promote sustainability and resourcefulness. By using our comfrey tonic, you’re helping reduce waste, support biodiversity, and grow greener in Abbeyleix.
We welcome feedback, ideas, and garden stories from those using the tonic – please get in touch with us to share your experiences.
One of out volunteers developed this project as part of a Circular Economy course with SETU - South East Technical University.
