Official Launch of National Tree Week in Abbeyleix to promote and celebrate "Planting Trees for a Greener Future"

The Official Launch of National Tree Week in Abbeyleix to promote and celebrate “Planting Trees for a Greener Future" took place on Sunday, March 3rd 2024 amidst the picturesque surroundings of Heritage House in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois. Members and friends of the Tree Council of Ireland came together to mark the occasion, made all the more significant as Abbeyleix showcased its impressive commitment to tree planting, having planted over 17,000 trees in the past four years.

Led by heavyweights of the Irish tree world, figures including President of the Tree Council, Cormac Downey; Éanna Ní Lamhna, Communications Officer from Tree Council; Pat Neville, Communications Manager from Coillte; and Dr. Niamh Shaw, alongside representatives from Abbeyleix Tidy Towns, the launch of National Tree Week underscored the collective dedication to environmental sustainability and the preservation of Ireland's natural beauty.

One of the highlights of the event was the planting of a range of trees at Heritage House, including the ceremonial planting of a native holly tree by Dr. Niamh Shaw, with the support of local school children from Scoil Mhuire, South School, and beyond. This act symbolized Abbeyleix's ongoing efforts to enhance its green spaces, promote biodiversity, and combat climate change through proactive tree-planting initiatives.

Chairman Robbie Quinn welcomed the esteemed guests to Abbeyleix and expressed his pride in the community's achievements, stating, "The concerted efforts of our community in planting nearly 17,000 trees over the past four years exemplify our steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship. Each tree planted represents a tangible step towards creating a greener, more sustainable future for Abbeyleix and beyond." He also took the opportunity to acknowledge the engagement of local primary schools in the Abbeyleix tree programme and announced the winners of the tree-themed art and poetry competition held in conjunction with the event.

The launch of National Tree Week served as a platform to promote the theme "Planting Trees for a Greener Future" and inspire community engagement and collaboration in addressing pressing environmental challenges.

The presence of Dr. Niamh Shaw, whose dedication to science communication and STEAM education resonated deeply with the ethos of National Tree Week, highlighted the interconnectedness of science, education, and environmental advocacy in fostering a more sustainable society.

As National Tree Week draws to a close, Abbeyleix stands as a strong example of grassroots activism and environmental leadership, inspiring communities across Ireland to join in nurturing and protecting our precious natural resources.
