How we manage meadows for pollinators

No matter the size of your meadow – from a small back lawn to a community green or several acres of farmland – equipment is something you’ll need to consider. Every type of machinery has its pros and cons, and the best approach will depend largely on what you already have available and the scale of the site.

A simple regime of mowing followed by removing the cuttings can effectively replicate the traditional hay-cutting and grazing cycle used on larger sites. Lawns, school grounds, road verges, graveyards and smaller fields are all being managed successfully in this way.

As part of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan Bee Festival (2025), Abbeyleix Tidy Towns hosted a summer showcase highlighting the wide range of tools and machinery used to manage grasslands for biodiversity.

3 Key Principles

1 Reduce cutting frequency

Less frequent cutting allows flowering plants to develop and complete their lifecycle.

2 Remove cut grass where possible

Leaving cuttings behind returns nutrients to the soil, favouring vigorous grasses over wildflowers.

3 Avoid grass treatment products

E.g. Fertilisers, Herbicides, MossKillers etc,

This Gives Rise to 2 Main Practical Approaches:

Short Flowering Meadows or Late Season Cut and Lift

Option 1 — Short Flowering Meadow

This approach involves extending the interval between cuts. E,g, moving from weekly to anything from fortnightly to 6 week interval cuts.

The ideal interval depends on: Grass growth rate - Weather conditions - The capacity of your mower

It is important to stay within the capability of your mower. Overly long grass can overwhelm smaller machines.

Option 2 — Late Season Cut and Lift

This approach allows grass and wildflowers to grow through spring and summer before cutting and removing vegetation later in the season.

Benefits include: Extended flowering period - Improved nectar and pollen availability - Gradual reduction of soil fertility - Increased plant diversity

This method usually requires equipment other than a standard lawnmower.

Scythe and Hay Pike

Ideal for small areas, tight corners, and sensitive habitats.

Quiet - Low impact - Highly visual for demonstrations

It is excellent for awareness-raising and educational events.

However - scything requires skill and good technique - Is physically demanding - Is rarely sufficient as a stand-alone solution.

Strimmer with brushcutter attachment

Ideal for: Small plots - Edges - Banks - Uneven terrain - Areas around obstacles

The strimmer is flexible, efficient, and avoids transporting heavy mowing equipment.

Lawnmower

Good for: Short flowering meadows - Paths through meadows.

Visibility lines - Transitional zones

A robust mower can often manage a three- to four-week cutting interval for short flowering meadow systems.

Not all mowers are created equal.

Mini-tractor mower

Efficient for medium-scale open spaces with good access.

This equipment works particularly well for short flowering meadow areas.

Power scythe

Effective for:

Medium to large plots - Longer grass - Rougher ground - Areas unsuitable for conventional mowers/ Unsuitable for tractors

This is a powerful machine requiring trained operators and appropriate transport.

Tractor-mounted high-tip collector

Suitable for large-scale cut-and-lift operations - especially for roadside areas.

Operated by commercial, insured contractor

Advantages:

Cuts and collects in one pass - Reduces manual handling - Enables management at scale
Solves the problem of collecting and removing cut vegetation on arger sites.
This equipment is typically dependent on adequate funding and site access.

Local Farmer with Mower

You nay be lucky enough to have a cooperative farmer locally with older/ smaller equipment.

Note that modern mowing machines are 'massive' and not compatible with smaller field parcels

Farmers will be wary of bringing this sophisticated equipment into unknown/ rough parcels. (This is understandable)

Can be a great option in some circumstances

Managing 'Meadow Cuttings'

Removing, and processing meadow vegetation is often the most labour-intensive stage.

For small areas, cut material may be piled discreetly or composted on site.

For larger sites, removal becomes a significant logistical challenge.

In Abbeyleix, grass vegetation from selected areas are diverted to a local anaerobic digestion facility, where the material is blended with green waste to generate biogas (which in turn is used to generate green electricity) - a nice practical circular-economy solution!

It's a Long-Term Programme!

Wildflower meadows can sometimes take a while to really bloom, but with careful management, it is definitely worth the wait.
