Abbeyleix was the venue of the launch of the first Wonder Bag in Ireland. Abbeyleix Tidy Towns were contacted by a rep from Natural Balance, South Africa with a proposal for a social enterprise that would bring about social changes in South Africa by making communities more sustainable. The committee approached Abbeyleix Womens Development who embraced the challenge. The women spent a few months making the bags using recycled materials such as old curtains.

The bags are a fantastic concept, it slow cooks food, it can be used as a warming oven, it can also ripen fruit and it keeps food frozen.

Pat Carey Executive Chef had a captive audience for his cookery demonstrations in Heritage House on Sunday. He officially launched the wonder bags preparing an Irish stew & Beef Stew which he put in the saucepans in the bag. Sand allowed them to slow cook.

All the bags were sold. The money raised will be spent in an Isolated community in rural Eastern Cape which has been brought to the attention of The National Development Agency
