Abbeyleix Discovery Day

Abbeyleix Discovery Day on 4th December provided the locals and visitors alike a chance to experience the delights and treasures of the Heritage Town of Abbeyleix.

Strong emphasis was placed on showcasing the heritage features of the town.

The following list is just a sample of what was organised for the day:

Heritage and Tours: 11 am Garden Tours- free bus to discover the garden delights in and around Abbeyleix, to include free guided tour of Sensory, Heywood and Fruitlawn Gardens. Booking Essential 087 9937687

Workshop at Heritage Centre: 12 pm focusing on the creation of a street directory of Abbeyliex at the time of the 1911 census. Booking essential 057 8731653/087 6490774

Walking Tour of the Town: 1.30pm Free quided walking historical tour of Abbeyleix town with local guide. Stop off en route for mouth watering refreshments at the town’s Gallic Kitchen.

Abbeyleix Bog Walk: 2pm Meet at Abbeyliex Manor Hotel for complimentary tea and scones before a guided walking tour of Abbeyleix bog with ecologist Dr Fiona McGowan.

Sexton’s Cottage: 2pm-4pm Built in 1800’s by the Church Of Ireland to house the sexton and now lovingly restored to its 19th century glory

Food & Restaurants: Farmers Market 10am-4pm. McEvoy Bistro Open 1pm-4pm, Food Sustainability Event 3pm Guest Speaker Jim Tynan from the Kitchen & Foodhall.
